Special uses for categories

Beyond just assigning categories to a post based on its subject matter, there are a couple special ways to use categories.

Home Page “Placement” Categories

  • Main column = Featured News: The home page currently shows the “Featured News” category in the main column.
  • Sidebar = other categories: The sidebar shows stories from a few more categories. At launch of the new layout (1/1/2017), these categories are Juneau, Regions (labeled with the “Alaska” heading; this section also excludes the Juneau category), and Nation & World.

Note: it’s pretty easy to change which categories have a block on the home page, so it’s worth checking with KTOO digital services if you need to know the specific categories that are currently used here.

Primary Category

The primary category for a post is shown above the headline.

It includes the category name and a link to its archive page.

To set this category:

  1. Edit the post
  2. Under “Categories” on the right, click the “Make Primary” link next to the category you want
  3. The category that says “Primary” next to it will show up above the title as shown above.
Important note: the “Primary” category must be a sub-category of the “Topics” category for this to work (this could be changed in the future if desired – talk to David).
