At some point we will start using the new block editor to edit WordPress posts and pages. (It’s also sometimes called the “Gutenberg” editor).
You’ll be able to keep using the old editor indefinitely (although some day it may go away), but advanced page layouts will be with the new editor (and you can use it for anything you like).
The block editor is still relatively new and some people like it and some people don’t. I’ve heard of no plans to get rid of the option for using the classic editor. As always (but especially with new features) I would encourage you to do important work offline and not trust a web interface to be 100% reliable with preserving your work.
I’ll be collecting resources and tips here as I come across them:
- A quick start guide to the interface from “Go Gutenberg”
- Another end users tutorial
- To use the new editor, click “Switch to Block Editor” link on the lower right of a post (see this post for more details)
- I haven’t enabled all of the available types of blocks, so if you see references to block types you can’t add but you think would be helpful, please let me know.
- Tip: If it’s annoying to have the little toolbar pop up at the top of every block, enable “Top Toolbar” (under the three-dot menu at the upper right) to get it up to the top of the editor
