After media has been recorded by Polaris: Play Ingest the media needs to be trimmed and the record in ProTrack needs to be updated. This document will explain the four steps involved in doing this. 1. Reviewing the record list in Polaris: Play Ingest List., 2. Setting up a media port 3. trimming the media. And, 4. Updating the ProTrack record to reflect the correct times.
1. REVIEWING Polaris: Play Ingest List
Looking at Harmonic Manager machine in ECR you should see the program that looks something like the picture below. The large buttons at the top of the page will take you to an Overview screen, the Clip Manager, Dub Work Orders, and the two media ports that this program is licensed to control. We dedicate the use of media ports MP4-SD and MP5-SD for recording purposes. The items in green at the top of the list are items that have already been recorded and will need to be trimmed. When a media port is in use (or recording) it looks like the “MP5-SD” button below (with a “Recording” label over it). The calendar/grid layout below the list is a timeline of scheduled items for ingest. You can look in the upper left hand corner of the blue screen titled “Scheduled Ingest: MP5-SD” (or by clicking on the MP4-SD) to see when the next show is scheduled for record for the respective media port. If you have enough time before the next show, you can use media port 4 or 5 to trim the shows.

2. A. SETTING UP A MEDIA PORT
- To start a media port, click on the Omneon Clip Tool Icon in the task-bar at the bottom of the screen (highlighted in the picture below).
- Enter the IP Address for the Harmonic Media Director (192.168.1.156) in the MediaDirector entry box
- Click “ListPlayers”
- Select either MP4-SD or MP5-SD depending upon which one has more time before the next recording. Then click OK. (Clip Tool pictured below)
2.B. Changing your Display Monitor Source
- Next you will need to change the Monitor Prep Station 3 to look at the media port you selected. Here are the steps.
- Look at the Utah Scientific monitor to be sure that you are looking at the prep monitor’s settings. Press the button labeled “Mon” in the upper left position.
- Pay attention to (or write down) which media port is selected in the SOURCE list because you will want to restore it to whatever it is set to once you have finished (generally it is MP3‑A SD).
- Press the “Source Category” on the middle button on the rigtht side of the display screen.
- Then turning the nob, scroll down and highlight “Servers” and either press the scroll nob, or use the “Take” button to the right of it to select the “Servers” list.
- Turn the nob again down to select either MP 4-A SD or MP 5-A SD depending upon which media port you have decided to use. Activate it by either pressing the scroll nob, or by pressing the “Take” button. (You can also use the MP5 button as a shortcut).
3. Trimming in the ClipTool
- At this point, you’ll want to return to using the Omneon ClipTool and ProTrack to trim the show and update the length of the show in ProTrack.
- Select the Load (alt+L) button to load the list of shows to trim. You can type (quickly) the first few letters of the show to move you to that part of the list.
- Once you have selected the show you want to load select the Load button.
- Press Close to dismiss the Select clip(s) dialogue.
- Reviewing Controls of ClipTool
You can use the following controls or shortcuts to maneuver in the Omneon Cliptool. You’ll want to set an in point at the beginning of the show and an outpoint at the end. It is a good idea to look at the ProTrack record to see what lenght the show should be. In general we record an extra 15 seconds at the beginning of the show which includes the slate and countdown and about a minute at the end in order to get promos if there is one on the end. In addition to the highlighted buttons above, here are Omneon ClipTool Hot Keys that may be used to set in/out points and to move forward and backward through a show.
* J = Reverse (repeating increases speed e.g. JJJ takes you to 4x reverse).
* K = Pause.
* L = Play Forward (repeating increases speed e.g. LLL takes you to 4x forward) .
* I = Mark In.
* O = Mark Out.
* Shift+I = takes you to the beginning of the selected clips In mark.
* Shift+O = takes you to the end of the selected clips Out mark.
* Alt+E = Eject all clips.
* Left and Right Arrow keys = moving forward or reverse one frame at a time
4. UPDATING ProTrack Record
- In ProTrack Select the Program Information button.
- In The Program Information dialogue, select File | Query (Q) to begin a query for the show you are interested in.
- Either type the Title I: or the Program Code with * (multiple characters) or ? (a single character) as wildcards for the program you wish to modify. In this case we will type “DSBT*1629*” in the Program Code: entry box.
- Press OK to perform the query.
- Once the Program Information dialogue has loaded the record you are interested in trimming, Select Edit | Update | Update Length (Ctrl+L) to see the expected length and to change the Approximate field from Y to N.
- Once you’ve entered the correct time for the show, and selected N for Approx?, select OK to dismiss the dialogue. It may ask you if you want to update the Media. You should select Y.
- Using the controls in the Omneon ClipTool, you will want to skim through the show at 32x to verify that sound and video are good throughout and trim the show’s in and out points to be the correct length (in this case 00:26:46;00).
- Now go back to ProTrack and verify that the media entry for that record has the correct length and is marked “Recorded”.
- In the ProTrack Program Information Dialogue select Tools | Media Info (F1) to bring up the Media Information dialogue for that Program.
- Double check the Duration and Change the “Status” pull down to reflect “Recorded” (instead of Not Recorded).
- Click OK, Then Yes to confirm the changes. Then close the Media Information and repeat the steps above to trim and edit records for the rest of the shows.
- Once you’ve done that, you can remove them from the list in the Polaris: Play Ingest list.
- To remove a show from Polaris Play:Ingest, highlight the show you wish to remove from the list and press the “Delete” key on your keyboard (or right click and select Delete). Be careful to remove only the recorded shows (green in the list) not inadvertently removing shows that have not yet been recorded (either shaded white or grey in the list).
- Return your prep monitor to the source that was selected before you may have changed it in Step 2.B above.
