Gavel owners manual

Gavel events you create in Invintus should be automatically shown in WordPress for ktoo.org.

Some important points:

  • Everything is public as soon as you save it. Categories, keywords, all events. Even “private” Gavel events are not private. A better term would be unlisted (and they’re actually much less secure than unlisted YouTube videos because Invintus IDs are trivial to guess). Anyone with an interest in seeing what’s private could easily view a list of all of our videos, including “private” ones.
  • Invintus videos/events with a very short description will not be indexed in search engines like Google.
    • This is to keep our web site having thousands of very short pages without content that’s useful to Google, which could lower search scores for our site as a whole.
    • The threshold is currently set to 40-50 words. If you want the video to show up in Google search results, make a description that’s longer than this.
  • Limit categories to truly re-usable, high-level, public, and long-term organization of events. Questions to consider:
    • Would this make sense as a place to look for someone browsing for this video?
    • Before creating a category: Will there be a lot of other videos in this category (e.g., a committee that will have a lot more meetings) or is this a clearly-defined type of event that will remain relevant (e.g., State of the State address)?
  • Use keywords for shorter, more ad hoc, or internal organization
    • Keywords are great for likely search terms (the search engine can be tuned to use these to identify important terms)
    • A short series of talks or videos that is unlikely to have long term relevance
    • Internal organization of events for future reference
  • Never edit Invintus videos/events, categories, keywords, etc. in WordPress. Edit them in the Invintus control center; WordPress will automatically mirror those changes.
