URL Redirects

Instructions to redirect one URL to another. This is only available to Administrators – if you need access, talk to digital services.

Warning: the URL you’re directing from will no longer be accessible to visitors – they’ll automatically be taken to the target URL.

Under “Tools” in the left hand menu, click on “Redirection”

At the bottom of the list of redirects, fill out the form and click “Add Redirect”

When anyone goes to the Source URL they will be sent to the Target URL instead.

A few caveats:

  • Source in listings/home page: If you redirect a post but keep it published, that post (at the Source URL) will still show up in listings (on the front page, category listings, search, etc.) but when people click on it they will be taken to the target URL.
  • Deleting Source: You can make the story at the Source URL a draft (or even delete it) and the redirect will still work (it’s based on URLs, not posts). Useful if you don’t want it to show up on the home page or anything anymore.
  • Facebook previews: To get the preview to work right when sharing to Facebook, you will probably have to click “Scrape Again” on the Facebook debugger.
  • Other redirects: You should never have to worry about this in the normal course of things, but there are some legacy and low level redirects set up in the WP Engine hosting dashboard (just in case you’re seeing mysterious redirects that aren’t in this plugin).
